How to Become a Medical Billing Specialist

What is a Medical Billing Specialist?

Medical billing clerks interpret medical codes and submit bills to insurance companies, patients and other agencies for medical services. A medical biller may also be the coder and the medical receptionist at a small office. In general, however, a medical biller can expect to be primarily responsible for insurance and patient billing.

What does a Medical Billing Specialist do?

Medical billing specialists are largely responsible for making sure medical office revenue cycles run smoothly. Although a medical biller’s duties vary with the size of the work facility, the biller typically assembles all data concerning the bill. This can include payment posting, claims transmissions, even patient/insurance follow-up.

Medical billers also frequently communicate with physicians and other healthcare professionals to obtain additional information/to clarify diagnoses. The medical biller must understand how to read the medical record and, be familiar with CPT®, HCPCS Level II and ICD-10-CM codes.

Required Education and or Certification.

A common pathway for an entry-level position is completion of a 2-year degree or 1-year certificate program in medical billing and coding. Many technicians go on to become certified in a specialty area of the field.
